I'm a Bioinformatician and a Research Scientist at Houston Methodist Research Institute, where I'm joined to the Infectious Disease Department. I am currently leading the genomics enterprise of the unit using all kinds of "omics" data to to better understand the biology and evolution of infectious diseases organisms.

ABOUT ME
I have worked in the areas of eukaryotic pathogens and bioinformatics for more than 12 years. I have a long history of working with parasite genomic data, especially Trypanosomatids and Apicomplexan parasites. During the last few years, I have acquired a specific expertise in evolutionary genomics and the analysis of highly-repetitive genomes and transcriptomes, performing the assembly, annotation, variant calling, and also detecting and describing their duplications and repetitive elements. I have also participated for two consecutive years as advisor of the UFMG team in the IGEM competition, an international competition of Synthetic Biology. In my previous position at the University of Georgia in Dr. Jessica Kissinger’s research group, I have assembled and annotated several parasite's genomes using several sequencing platform data, such as paired-end Illumina, Ion-Torrent short reads, PacBio and Nanopore long-reads. This enabled our group to find new genomic structures (in both nuclear and mitochondrial genomes) that have a substantial impact on these parasites biological knowledge with new biological insights.
With this data I also performed genomic duplication studies and analyses of parasite genetic crosses in population datasets. As a bioinformatician I also have collaborations with several worldwide research groups working with different protozoan parasites.
